Fluoride and Your Child: What Windsor Parents Should Know
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities. It is one of the most effective and well-studied tools available for protecting children's teeth. The Canadian Dental Association, Ontario Dental Association, and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry all recommend appropriate fluoride use for children starting from the first tooth.
How Fluoride Protects Teeth
The Canadian Dental Association explains:
"Fluoride is a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay. It does this by making the outer surface of teeth (enamel) more resistant to the acid attacks that cause tooth decay."
— Canadian Dental Association, Fluoride and Your Child
Fluoride works in two ways:
- Topically — when applied directly to teeth through toothpaste, mouth rinses, or professional fluoride treatments, it strengthens the enamel surface
- Systemically — when consumed through fluoridated water or supplements, it is incorporated into developing teeth before they erupt, making them more resistant to decay from the inside
Fluoride Toothpaste: How Much to Use
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and CDA recommend:
- First tooth to age 3: a rice-grain sized smear of fluoridated toothpaste
- Ages 3 to 6: a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste
- Ages 6 and up: a regular amount, with continued supervision to ensure children spit rather than swallow
The AAPD confirms that the small amount recommended for infants and toddlers is safe even if swallowed. The benefit of cavity prevention outweighs the minimal risk of fluorosis from these tiny amounts.
Professional Fluoride Treatments
At Growing Smiles, Dr. Gumber applies professional fluoride varnish after dental cleanings. Professional fluoride is a concentrated treatment that provides stronger protection than toothpaste alone.
The procedure is quick and painless:
- A thin layer of fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth with a small brush
- The varnish sets on contact with saliva
- Your child can eat and drink shortly after application
- The treatment takes less than a minute
The CDA recommends professional fluoride treatments for children at increased risk of cavities. Dr. Gumber evaluates each child's individual risk factors and recommends a fluoride schedule accordingly.
Water Fluoridation in Windsor-Essex
The Ontario Dental Association supports community water fluoridation as a safe and effective public health measure:
"Water fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride in a community water supply to the recommended level for preventing tooth decay. More than 90 national and international health organizations recognize the benefits of water fluoridation."
— Ontario Dental Association, Water Fluoridation
Windsor's municipal water supply is fluoridated. If your family uses well water or bottled water as a primary source, your child may not be receiving the protective benefits of fluoridated water. In these cases, Dr. Gumber may recommend alternative fluoride supplementation.
Is Fluoride Safe for Children?
The safety of fluoride at recommended levels has been extensively studied and confirmed by Health Canada, the Canadian Dental Association, and the World Health Organization. When used as directed — appropriate toothpaste amounts for age and professionally supervised treatments — fluoride is safe and effective.
The primary concern with excessive fluoride intake in young children is dental fluorosis, which causes faint white spots on developing permanent teeth. This is a cosmetic issue, not a health concern, and is prevented by using the recommended amount of toothpaste and supervising brushing.
